Akuna Group, in partnership with Google and Curious Refuge

Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and South Africa For Aspiring and emerging African filmmakers, screenwriters, content creators, photographers, animators, designers, editors, visual artists and storytellers Deadline Nov 15, 2026

About this opportunity

From Script to Screen with AI is a free creative-development programme that will train aspiring and emerging African storytellers to use artificial intelligence in filmmaking. Akuna Group is delivering the programme with Google, using a filmmaking curriculum from Curious Refuge and tailored mentorship from Akuna Learning. All participants begin with a foundation in AI filmmaking before specialising in fiction, documentary, animation, advertising or screenwriting. The programme includes a twelve-week live academy, technical and creative skills development, mentorship and industry support. Graduates may form teams, develop ideas and pitch for production funding. Selected funded teams will make films with creative and technical support. Creators retain ownership of their work. The programme follows five stages: online application; learning and certification; mentoring; pitching; and film production. It is free to apply and free for selected participants to attend. Benefits include world-class training, practical AI tools and skills, mentorship, an opportunity to compete for production funding, career and earning-development support, access to a pan-African creative network, and pathways to festivals and wider audiences. The organiser does not state a guaranteed funding amount or promise that every graduate will receive production funding. Applicants should prepare their personal and contact details, a CV or professional profile, proof of identity, their preferred pathway and area of expertise, and one example of their best creative work. They must also submit a personal statement of up to 250 words and a 60 to 90-second introduction video explaining a story they want to explore. Moving-image samples may be up to three minutes and do not need to use AI. Applicants must confirm that they meet the technical requirements and can participate fully. Applications close on 15 November 2026. No deadline timezone is stated, so applicants should submit early. The programme begins on 25 January 2027.

Who should consider it

Applicants must be physically resident in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone or South Africa and must be at least 18 years old on the application date. They need access to a laptop, reliable internet and consistent power, and must be available to participate fully from 25 January 2027. Professional AI experience is not required, but applicants must provide a body of creative work, however modest, that demonstrates talent and commitment. Eligible disciplines include filmmaking, screenwriting, content creation, photography, animation, design, editing, visual art and related storytelling practice.
